German Teaching Hospital Chooses iSOFT Group Limited (ASX:ISF) Laboratory
Sydney, Aug 26, 2010 AEST (ABN Newswire) - iSOFT Group Limited (ASX:ISF), a leading provider of information systems for the healthcare sector, has won a contract to implement its laboratory information system at the University Clinic Leipzig (UKL).
UKL will deploy iSOFT Laboratory in all pathology departments, such as clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology and infectious disease serology. The contract is scheduled to run for five years. The hospital's investment amounts to about EUR700,000 in software licences and maintenance and support services for the new system. The goal is to establish a homogeneous system for all reporting in laboratory areas as well as to model all processes in one database, which offers enormous advantages in operating and supporting the entire system.
Alongside iSOFT Laboratory, the teaching hospital has commissioned additional iSOFT modules for microbiology, clinical laboratory, billing and result requesting for process automation throughout all pathology departments. Once installed, this will accelerate the delivery of results and enhance treatment quality. In addition, the high flexibility and scalability of the iSOFT system will allow the integration of existing analysis equipment into the IT environment to easily handle an increased flow of electronic data.
Fast and effective communication of results
The Laboratory Information Centre (LIC) module supplements the functionality of iSOFT Laboratory with paperless remote order requesting and results enquires. This real-time access to results greatly improves interoperability between laboratories and requesting medical departments and wards, which was one of the key aspects for the decision favouring iSOFT.
The fast information system within iSOFT Laboratory will provide laboratory staff with data on all current orders, as well as updating users on processing status. The system will also offer seamless integration with the existing hospital information system to transmit laboratory results directly to a patient's file, quickly providing clinicians with electronic results while they are working on the wards.
Quality control
As the teaching hospital has to deal with increasing volumes of samples and results, it became more and more difficult to maintain a consistent level of quality. iSOFT Laboratory includes a range of tools to improve sample management and quality control. Users can create workflows to ensure that all real-time data collected is validated against laboratory-specific measurements.
Furthermore, a unique predictive function can be used to identify and correct errors at an early stage during trend analysis. The software records every laboratory activity, so any errors that may arise are retained in a log file where they can be traced at any stage, and at the same time a messaging system automatically alerts managers.
Once implemented, the iSOFT solution will support 400 laboratory staff and 230 workstations. About 500 workstations will be installed in about 60 wards and outpatient clinics for clinical staff to request tests and view results online. Consequently, greater consistency in laboratory infrastructure will enable UKL to use common resources to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
