Studsvik AB (STO:SVIK) The modernization of reactor 3 at the Oskarshamn plant will mean the replacement of a large number of metal components. Studsvik has agreed with the owner OKG to treat 1,400 tonnes of metallic waste for a total of SEK 28 million.

"This is a large contract for Studsvik, with a volume equivalent to almost half of a full year's production for our Swedish facility", says Studsvik's CEO Magnus Groth.

The aim is to be able to give radiological clearance to as much of the material as possible. Normally 95 per cent of metallic material of this type can be free released after treatment. The free released material can be recycled and used as raw material in the foundry industry, while the remaining material is returned to the customer for final disposal.

Studsvik's treatment means that the material is analyzed and segmented, after which the material is decontaminated and finally melted down. As a final step in the process measurements are taken to determine the parts of the material that can be radiologically cleared. Studsvik's contract also includes responsibility for transportation of the material to and from Studsvik.

OKG has specified March 2, 2009 as the starting date for modernizing the Oskarshamn 3 plant. Studsvik expects to be able to start transportation in the second quarter, after which treatment at the Studsvik facility outside Nyköping can start.
