Overnight US shares ended with modest gains helped by better-than-expected retail sales data and upbeat broker comments. But investors were still cautious ahead of the release of the non-farm payrolls data. Most Asian stocks declined Thursday. China's Shanghai Composite lost 1.9 per cent over fears of possible rates rise while Chinese central bank is tightening liquidity in the interbank money markets.
US stocks closed mixed overnight as the market wobbled after the US Federal Reserve decided to maintain its interest rates at record low to support the subdued recovery. The central bank's upbeat outlook of the economy has led to speculation about a faster interest rate rise.
All the key markets in Asia were hurt by the debt problem of Dubai today. Japan's key Nikkei stock index opened nearly 2 percent lower Friday while Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index declined about 3 per cent at opening with banks which are exposed to overseas assets tumbled massively.
Wall Street finished mixed overnight. Dow and S&P 500 indices ended their rising streak while Nasdaq posted its 11th straight rise led by Apple and Yahoo. Investors started to lock in their profits from a series of rallies driven by earnings reports.
Asia's major markets ended mostly lower yesterday. Tokyo stocks were hit by the data of huge contraction in the economy, but Shanghai Composite outperformed the Asian markets backed by hopes of further government economic stimulus measures, which also boosted the Hong Kong shares.
Today the major indexes in Asia have been hit by the unfavourable news from the US. Asian share markets ended mixed yesterday indexes moved up and down in a narrow range. Shanghai continued its rally over government stimulus measures with a rise of 1.8 percent, and also led the Hong Kong shares up 0.8 percent. Tokyo and Seoul markets closed slightly lower as market was weighed down by the worries over the US rescue plan.
Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower Friday with investor sentiment hurt by Sony Corp.'s forecast of an annual operating loss as well as by a fall in U.S. shares overnight due to disappointing corporate earnings there. Yesterday the Aisan markets gained on the good lead from Wall Street. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index firmed 0.6% to 12657.99. The Shanghai Composite Index added 1%. South Korea's Kospi Composite rose 1.1% to 1116.23.
