Australian shares today extended Friday's fall, dropping massively this morning. The Asian markets were broadly lower on Monday after the Dow Jones on Friday slumped 3.2 per cent due to the refresh fears on Europe debt. The Hungarian prime minister's spokesman said the country's economy was at risk of entering a Greek-style debt crisis. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index plunged more than 3 per cent in early trade.

The Australian market Thursday delivered a strong opening, supported by optimism towards the US economy. The catalyst for the jump was the better-than-expected figures in pending home sales in the US, which pushed Wall Street higher overnight. The local market had been in a negative territory for three consecutive days this week. The S&P/ASX 200 index today rebounded with a 1.8 per cent jump in early trade.

Wall Street shares on Thursday shrugged off the news of disappointing economic data and rebounded from early loss. US retail sales fell unexpectedly by 0.3 per cent in December, a poor sign for the holiday shopping season. The market rise was led by technology shares as investors were expecting strong numbers from Intel.

US stocks was slightly higher on Friday, hitting at least 15-month closing highs despite a bigger-than-expected job loss data. US dollar was lowered on the disappointing payroll data. This week the US firms, which are widely expected to show significant improvement compared to the corresponding period last year, will kick off the quarterly earnings reporting season.

Asian shares could be lifted after US and European markets rallied overnight on optimistic outlook of 2010. Yesterday Asian markets mostly kicked off the new year with gains. Japan's Nikkei surged 1 per cent on yen's weakness and a financial lifeline to Japan Airlines. The global markets also cheered for the strong manufacturing data from China and India. However, China's Shanghai Composite fell 1 per cent on Monday over fears on inflation.

Asian shares delivered a positive opening this morning. The Asian bourses were higher in thin trade on the last day of 2009 as commodity prices rose and China pledged to maintain policies that helped pull the world economy out of recession. For the year, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index added 52%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 Index gained 31% in 2009 and Singapore was up 65 percent over the year. But Wall Street tumbled on the final trading day in 2009. Dow index remains down 26 per cent from its 2007 highs.
