Asian Markets Overview of February 2

Asian markets are expected to drop after the plummet on Wall St. On Friday Japan's Nikkei stock average lost 3.1 per cent, sliding on economic woes and a tumble by Toshiba Corp after it was hit by news it may merge part of its chip operations, a loss forecast, and a ratings cut. The benchmark Hang Seng Index closed up 123.78 points, or 0.94 per cent, at 13,278.21. The Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges open today after the week-long Chinese New Year holidays.

Asian Markets Overview of January 30

Asian markets generally opened lower on Friday. The markets gained Thursday as the U.S. plans to help troubled banks boosted financial shares. Hong Kong's benchmark Hang Seng Index jumped 4.6% on the first trading day after the Lunar New Year holiday. In Tokyo, the Nikkei Stock Average of 225 companies gained 1.8% to 8251.24, bringing its three-day advance to 7.4%. Markets in China, Taiwan and Vietnam remain closed for the Lunar New Year holiday.

Asian markets are likely to post solid gains on Thursday, as U.S. stocks rallied on optimism over a fresh rescue package to help banks to remove toxic assets. The Nikkei stock average rose 1.2 percent on Thursday, buoyed by exporters such as Advantest Corp on a softer yen and after optimism about the U.S. government's rescue plan boosted Wall Street.

Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower Friday with investor sentiment hurt by Sony Corp.'s forecast of an annual operating loss as well as by a fall in U.S. shares overnight due to disappointing corporate earnings there. Yesterday the Aisan markets gained on the good lead from Wall Street. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index firmed 0.6% to 12657.99. The Shanghai Composite Index added 1%. South Korea's Kospi Composite rose 1.1% to 1116.23.
