Asian Markets Overview of March 11, 2010

Dow Jones Industrial Average was marginally higher overnight, supported by financial stocks. But material stocks were under pressure as commodities prices declined. Asian markets Wednesday closed mixed. Singapore market finished 0.8 per cent higher to their a seven-week high after a report showed that Singapore's economy was expected to grow 6.5 per cent in 2010. Japan's Nikkei 225 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index finished flat after moving between gains and losses during the session. South Korea's Kospi ended 0.1% higher. But China's Shanghai Composite snapped a three-day rise and fell 0.7 per cent ahead of the inflation data.

Asian shares could see a flat start on Wednesday while Wall Street closed slightly higher overnight. Steelmakers and resource stocks are expected to suffer declines around the region follow commodities prices dropped. Most Asian markets posted small gains yesterday. Shanghai and Hong Kong bourses rose after an upbeat forecast from China Life Insurance Co., mainland's largest insurance company. China's Shanghai Composite added 0.5 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index advanced 0.1 per cent. South Korea's Kospi and Taiwan's Taiex inched up 0.1 per cent each. But Japan's Nikkei 225 closed down 0.17 per cent on profit-taking selling.

A cautious start is expected in Asian markets Tuesday while Wall Street took a breather after recent gains and closed slightly lower overnight. Asian stocks rallied on Monday, led by resources sector which was helped by higher commodities prices. Australian market posted a seventh consecutive day of gains yesterday. Japan's Nikkei 225 surged 2.1 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index advanced nearly 2 per cent, South Korea's Kospi was up 1.56 per cent and China's Shanghai Composite gained 0.7 per cent.

Australian Market Report of February 25: Lower Metals Prices Hit Resources Giants

The Australian share market fell sharply Wednesday after led by mining giants BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto as metals prices dropped. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index ended down 69.8 points, or 1.5 per cent, at 4648.5, while the broader All Ordinaries index lost 65.1 points, or 1.4 per cent, to 4665.9.

Australian shares posted a strong gain on Wednesday while Wall Street and Asian markets picked up on a brightened outlook and higher commodities prices. The local market was also lifted by a bunch of upbeat profit results. At the close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index surged 100.1 points, or 2.2 per cent, at 4667.9, while the broader All Ordinaries index jumped 96 points, or 2.1 per cent, to 4686.8.

Asian Markets Overview of February 11

Most asian markets were higher on hope of a rescue package for Greece yesterday. Japan's Nikkei index ended up 0.3%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index added 0.7%. Both China's Shanghai Composite and Taiwan's Taiex climbed 1.1%. Japanese market is closed on Thursday for National Foundation Day, while Taiwan market is closed for Pre-Chinese New Year.
