Living with Carbon: A Brilliant New Take on Climate, Economy and Life in the Future
Sydney, Mar 28, 2011 AEST (ABN Newswire) - Frontier thought from Professor Bob Carter; Australian scientists have an amazing capability for brilliant and authentic thought. And as the climate lemmings continue to rush for the cliff top, we present the softly spoken and well-reasoned thoughts of James Cook University's Professor Bob Carter. 'A cost effective way to deal with the undoubted hazards of climate change' is how he introduces his work from his cyclone-ravaged home base of James Cook University, Townsville. He cleverly squares up to the two major issues of insufficient data and the tattooing of climate 'deniers' and the way these influences are skewing the debate.
Climate has always changed, he says. Many human effects, such as land clearing and construction making the planet glarier, and the emission of many greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, have the potential to affect climate. But carbon dioxide is a mild greenhouse gas he argues and really scientists can't discern all these effects with authority, yet. Storms, floods, droughts, bushfires, temperature waves and longer term temperature cycles, are here to stay. So lets set about understanding how to live with their risks and adapt like the fine evolutionary creatures we are.
Bob Carter's appearance comes at a critical moment with the Gillard Government swishing the prospect of a carbon tax over our head. "There will be no carbon tax under the government I lead". Chilling words seeing them again today. These words and political events reflect a desperately torn national view that does not recognise what Australia does for a living. We export nearly 150 million tonnes pa of thermal coal, read carbon, hoping they don't burn it at the other end? We also export around half that thermal value in uranium. As Tim Blair asked recently the Prime Minister in Sydney's Daily Telegraph 'By how much will your carbon dioxide tax reduce Australia's temperature?'
Of itself, Australia is only a tiny global emitter and it is now time, Bob Carter argues to stop our nation leading with a bone head (our words). His words: 'Policy makers need to abandon the illusory goal of 'preventing global warming' by reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Instead, dealing with climate reality as it unfolds represents the most prudent, practical and cost-effective solution to the global warming/climate change issue. Such a policy of adaptation is also strongly precautionary against any possibly dangerous, human-caused climate trends that might emerge in the future'.
See, we are a clever country. Come and share a special wisdom from a scientist with some riveting logic. (Oh yes, and thank you to new SMC friend Gina Reinhart for putting us onto Bob Carter).
