Ericsson Racing Team (STO:ERIC) STOCKHOLM, Sweden (Oct. 29, 2008) - Ericsson Racing Team's entries in the Volvo Ocean Race have completed a phenomenal 24 hours. Ericsson 4 keeps speeding to new records at the head of the fleet while stablemate Ericsson 3 consolidates its position in fourth place.
At 1425 GMT race data had recorded skipper Torben Grael's Ericsson 4 as covering 594.23 nautical miles, a potential new world record for a crewed monohull pending ratification from the World Sailing Speed Record Council.
It was the fourth time since 0355 GMT this morning that Ericsson 4 had increased the speed record from its ratified mark of 562.96 nautical miles (23.45-knot average).
"The conditions are not easy. Every time you go at this speed it's pretty hard," said skipper Grael. "We're going 30 knots very often. The wind is between 28 and 32 knots. The waves are not very good, but neither very bad. The conditions are marginal, especially during the night. It wasn't very fun at all."
Also in the past 24 hours, Ericsson 3 has surged into fourth place after languishing in the standings through the scoring gate. Anders Lewander and the Nordic crew last night overtook their Spanish rivals Telefónica Black and Telefóncia Blue, and now have a 32-mile cushion on Telefónica Blue.
Ericsson 3 was making 24.5 knots boatspeed in 32 knots of wind and a sea state of two meters.
