Cargotec Oyj (HEL:CGCBV) Cargotec Corporation, Press Release, October 9, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Finnish time
Cargotec has developed an efficient method of detecting radiation in container cargo that meets US requirements for 100% inbound container scanning in all ports by 2012.
With the help of Cargotec's technology, containers can be scanned when lifted, thus terminal operators are able to maintain their current levels of productivity despite being required to scan every box entering the port.
Troy Thompson, President of Cargotec Port Security, explains: "Very shortly, terminals will need container security solutions that comply with the US container security initiative, but without disrupting the efficiency of the normal flow of commerce within the terminal. The spreader-mounted solution from Cargotec Port Security performs gamma and neutron sensitivity scanning during the movement of the container in the normal ship-to-shore load/unload process, so enabling the port to meet its productivity requirements, and as such it is the right product for this time in the global container handling industry."
The US Customs and Border Protection Service (USA) has completed a formal performance evaluation of the spreader-mounted radiation detection system at Port Charleston, South Carolina. Field evaluation resulted in the detection and identification of radiological materials at all points tested across the container, even when radiological material was placed within seven layers of shielding.
The field evaluation conducted at Port Charleston is consistent with the results of an audited analysis of the Cargotec Port Security solution conducted at the US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In the Oak Ridge evaluation, the Cargotec Port Security spreader solution demonstrated 100% accuracy, with zero false positives and zero false negatives. Subsequent to this evaluation, the Cargotec Port Security system was awarded the Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology (QATT) designation from the US Department of Homeland Security.
Cargotec Port Security offers solutions that preserve container security without compromising the efficiency of container flows through ports. Such technology development is vital at Cargotec since customers expect the market leader to be proactive in solving issues which are common to the industry.
