In six successive years, Kesko has been listed in the Dow Jones sustainability indexes DJSI World and DJSI STOXX. In the 2008 assessment, Kesko's environmental work was rated the best in the specific industry. Measured by eco-efficiency indicators, Kesko got the full score for its work to cut energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, among other things.
The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI World), established in 1999, is the first international index to assess sustainable development. In 2001, the Dow Jones index family was expanded when the DJSI STOXX index was established to measure the performance of European listed companies.
"The emphasis of the requirements concerning specific industries was considerably increased in this year's assessment. Forerunning companies must be able to understand and manage not only the risks related to responsibility in the specific industry but, above all, the opportunities related to sustainability. Kesko's inclusion for many years in the Dow Jones indexes is a significant recognition to our long-term work and results achieved," says Ulla Rehell, Assistant Vice President, Corporate Responsibility.
This year, 320 companies from 26 countries were included in the global Dow Jones index and 162 companies from 14 countries in the European index. The companies have been categorised into wider Supersectors and smaller industry-specific subsectors, including Food and Drug Retailers, which has four companies in both the world and the European index. Kesko is the only Nordic retailing company in both indexes.
The assessment was carried out by an independent party, the SAM Group of Switzerland, which assessed companies on the basis of general and industry-specific criteria. As in previous years, the review covered all areas of corporate responsibility: environmental affairs and the economic and social responsibility of the company.
