Guernsey, 17 July 2008 - Volta Finance Limited (the "Company" or "Volta Finance" or "Volta") has published its June monthly report. The full report is attached to this release and is available on Volta Finance Limited's financial website (www.voltafinance.com).
Gross Asset Value
+---------------------------------------------------------+ | | At 30.06.08 | At 30.05.08 | |-----------------------------+-------------+-------------| | Gross Asset Value (GAV / €) | 177,907,879 | 183,121,226 | |-----------------------------+-------------+-------------| | GAV per share (€) | 5.92 | 6.10 | +---------------------------------------------------------+
As of the end of June 2008, the Gross Asset Value (the "GAV") of Volta Finance Limited (the "Company", "Volta Finance" or "Volta") was €177.9m or €5.92 per share, a decrease of €0.18 from €6.10 per share at the end of May 2008. This decrease of the GAV is the consequence of the decline of the ABS portfolio value.
The June mark-to-market variations* of Volta Finance's asset classes have been: -11.8% for ABS investments, -0.8% for CDO investments and +1.6% for Corporate Credit investments.
MARKET ENVIRONMENT
The financial environment has been particularly difficult in June. Markets continued to price in the ongoing difficulties of banks and financial institutions as well as the uncertainties brought by an unusual economic pattern reminiscent of stagflation featuring low growth and inflationary pressures.
From the end of May to the end of June, the spread of the 5y European iTraxx index (series 9) widened significantly from 77 bps to 101 bps, while its Crossover counterpart (5y iTraxx European Crossover index series 8) moved from 447 bps to 516 bps. According to the iTraxx LevX Senior Index, the average price for European liquid first lien loans declined from 96.69% to 96.08%.**
VOLTA FINANCE PORTFOLIO
At the end of June, the cash position of the Company was €47.2m equivalent. Most of this amount has been committed to several investments that will be settled in July for a total €32.2m.
Since the end of May, Volta has invested €8.7m in BB tranches of CLOs (€1.5m have been settled in June) as well as €25m in a new bespoke tranche of a corporate credit portfolio (ARIA III). This corporate credit portfolio, managed by AXA IM, has been executed on the 2 July 2008 and comprises 153 different credit names. At purchase, its Weighted Average Risk Factor is 252 and 93.5% of the portfolio is investment grade. The tranche attaches at 0% and detaches at 3% and has been structured with a 0.6% reserve.
As of today, Volta has nearly €12m available for investment. The Company will continue to invest in its primary underlying asset classes (among which Leveraged Loans or Corporate credits) through embedded leverage at the residual level or at a second loss level.
Due to the current crisis and its consequences in term of market prices, the portfolio has mechanically increased its position in two asset classes: CDOs (mainly US CLOs) and Corporate Credit. Further concentration in these two asset classes is to be expected although some diversification could be achieved through investments in first or second loss tranches of European or US Leveraged Loans portfolios.
Concerning Volta's UK RMBS residuals positions, which represents 12% of the GAV, we continue to monitor closely any available information to determine the likely evolution of performance in terms of prepayments and defaults. As stated in previous monthly reports, we expect Volta's UK RMBS residuals positions to continue suffering from the combined negative effects of high prepayments and rising defaults. Latest figures are showing that housing prices and mortgage lending are continuing their unprecedented contraction at a time when monetary policy facing an inflation/growth dilemma does not provide any support to the borrowers given that short-term Libor rates are close to 6 %.
June payments on Volta's UK RMBS residuals positions were affected by poor performances leading to decline in valuations and pointing to further bad news in the near future. Most of the decline in the mark-to-market value of Volta's RMBS UK non-conforming residuals since the end of January 2008 is likely to be matched by a further decline in expected cash flows additional to the €9m already announced at the end of January.
The Company will continue to monitor and manage its current assets and to seize reinvestment opportunities in a context of ongoing volatility and little liquidity.
* "Mark-to-market variation" is calculated as the Dietz-performance of the assets in each bucket, taking into account the MtM of the assets at month-end, payments received from the assets over the period, and assuming that changes in cross currency rates have no impact given that Volta Finance implements a currency hedge on non-euro assets. Nevertheless, some residual currency effects could impact the aggregate value of the portfolio when aggregating each bucket. ** Index data source: Bloomberg.
