Manila, Feb 5, 2007 AEST (ABN Newswire) - Government and international development agency representatives from across the globe are meeting in Hanoi today to discuss measures that will increase the effectiveness of international development assistance.

There is a growing international consensus that development aid must become more effective in delivering concrete results in impoverished communities.

"In order to deliver these results, donors need to look beyond their own parochial interests and align their programs with the development plans of recipient countries," says ADB Vice-President C. Lawrence Greenwood, Jr.

"When developing countries assume a leading role in managing the assistance they receive for tangible outcomes, more jobs are created, social services reach more poor families, and poverty rates are reduced."

Greater development effectiveness requires wide-ranging institutional and organizational changes that can take many years. This week's meeting in Hanoi represents another step toward identifying tangible measures that can improve aid effectiveness and reduce poverty.

This is particularly important in Asia. Although countries in Asia have pulled more people out of poverty at a faster rate than in any other time in human history, Asia remains home to two thirds of the world's poor.

This week's meeting provides developing nations with opportunities to learn from each other and share blueprints for success.

Countries will develop action plans to better manage for development results, and set benchmarks to gauge their progress.

The Third International Roundtable on Managing for Development Results brings together more than 500 experts and government officials from 40 countries, 33 aid and donor agencies, and about 30 NGOs and private companies.
