Manila, Dec 4, 2006 AEST (ABN Newswire) - Asian Development Bank (ASX: ATB) President Haruhiko Kuroda today offered his deepest sympathy and condolences to the people and Government of the Philippines following a typhoon that triggered devastating landslides in the country.
"I would like to assure you of ADB's fullest cooperation. We are closely monitoring the situation and stand ready to assist you in any possible way, especially in the long-term rehabilitation of the calamity areas," the ADB President said in a letter sent to Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Mr. Kuroda told President Arroyo that he is deeply saddened by the disaster, which hit near the same part of the country that was affected by major landslides in February.
He assured in his letter to the Philippine Government of ADB's fullest support and cooperation in alleviating the suffering brought about by this devastating incident.
The Philippine Government and aid agencies are still trying to assess the damage and casualties on the ground in the affected areas. Typhoon Reming, with the international codename Typhoon Durian, struck the country on 30 November.
