Asian shares delivered a positive opening this morning. The Asian bourses were higher in thin trade on the last day of 2009 as commodity prices rose and China pledged to maintain policies that helped pull the world economy out of recession. For the year, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index added 52%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 Index gained 31% in 2009 and Singapore was up 65 percent over the year. But Wall Street tumbled on the final trading day in 2009. Dow index remains down 26 per cent from its 2007 highs.
Asian markets mostly edged higher on Thursday in the morning. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average fell below 9600 points level for the first time in about four months. Nikkei eased its early gains after a real estate company Tokyo Tatemono said it will issue new shares to raise up to 45.64 billion yen. The Korean market was up on Thursday led by gains in key technology companies.
Japan's Asahi Breweries (TYO:2502) denied a newspaper report that it is competing with Suntory Holdings to buy European soft-drinks maker Orangina.
Philippines' food and beverage giant San Miguel Corp. (PSE:SMC) said its second-quarter net profit rose sixfold from a year earlier, largely due to the asset sale to Japanese brewer Kirin Holdings (TYO:2503).
Yesterday Asian markets ended lower after big overnight losses on Wall Street and on concerns about European banks. Tokyo's Nikkei index reached its lowest since October. Shanghai Composite saw a massive 4.7% fall in a single day. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index ended up 0.6% and Taiwan's Taiex gained 0.2%.
Asian markets opened higher today after Wall Street's gains. Yesterday Asia's major indexes closed broadly weaker on the further gloomy economic data of the US. Tokyo and Shanghai markets were slightly down while Hong Kong stocks gained 0.9% on hope of Chinese government's support to the mainland shares.
