Asian Activities Report for December 15, 2011 includes: DeNA Co., Ltd. (TYO:2432) has agreed to form a strategic alliance with Alibaba Cloud Computing to provide DeNA's Mobage social gaming platform to consumers and developers in China; Marubeni Corporation (TYO:8002) has agreed to acquire a 40% equity interest in APT Allgas Energy Pty Ltd; Japan Airlines and WestJet Airlines (TSE:WJA), a low-cost airline in Canada have signed a codeshare agreement which will place the "JL" flight indicator on WestJet-operated flights between Vancouver And six Canadian cities - Calgary, Edmonton, Kelowna, Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg, from December 15, 2011; Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. (TYO:4005) and Nabaltec AG (ETR:NTG) of Germany have been in discussions about collaborating on their Alumina and Aluminum Trihydroxide businesses.
Wall Street shares on Thursday shrugged off the news of disappointing economic data and rebounded from early loss. US retail sales fell unexpectedly by 0.3 per cent in December, a poor sign for the holiday shopping season. The market rise was led by technology shares as investors were expecting strong numbers from Intel.
Overnight US shares was lower on the disappointing Alcoa fourth-quarter report and profit warning from Chevron and Electronic Arts. Financial sector also fell as investors feared that a potential government levy might hurt bank profits.
US stocks was slightly higher on Friday, hitting at least 15-month closing highs despite a bigger-than-expected job loss data. US dollar was lowered on the disappointing payroll data. This week the US firms, which are widely expected to show significant improvement compared to the corresponding period last year, will kick off the quarterly earnings reporting season.
Asian shares could be lifted after US and European markets rallied overnight on optimistic outlook of 2010. Yesterday Asian markets mostly kicked off the new year with gains. Japan's Nikkei surged 1 per cent on yen's weakness and a financial lifeline to Japan Airlines. The global markets also cheered for the strong manufacturing data from China and India. However, China's Shanghai Composite fell 1 per cent on Monday over fears on inflation.
Asian shares delivered a positive opening this morning. The Asian bourses were higher in thin trade on the last day of 2009 as commodity prices rose and China pledged to maintain policies that helped pull the world economy out of recession. For the year, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index added 52%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 Index gained 31% in 2009 and Singapore was up 65 percent over the year. But Wall Street tumbled on the final trading day in 2009. Dow index remains down 26 per cent from its 2007 highs.
Asian bourses opened mixed on Thursday after Wall Street posted a small gain overnight. US dollar's rebound provides an excuse for investors to lock in profits from the recent rallies. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index pared its early gains this morning after a touch of a fresh 15 month high. Tokyo stocks fell on jitters over a series of corporate fund raising plans.
Asian stock markets were broadly lower Friday following the weakness in Wall Street. Chinese shares also fell on profit taking, but airline equities rose across the board on a new pricing mechanism of fuel surcharge to take effect this weekend.
Japan Airlines Corp. (TYO:9205) is looking to team up with shipping firm Nippon Yusen KK (TYO:9101) as part of the airline's plan to return to profitability with the help of restructuring.
All Nippon Airways Co. (TYO:9202) and Japan Airlines Corp. (TYO:9205) are reassessing their fuel surcharges and exploring possibility of charging the fees in October to reflect higher oil prices.
